If the essence and appearance of things directly coincided, all science would be. The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles. A class of laborers, who live only so long as they find work, and who find work only so long as their labor increases capital. These laborers, who must sell themselves piecemeal, are a commodity, like every other article of commerce 239. Ideology: a system of beliefs that reinforces existing social and economic relations by distorting the true nature of those relations. The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling ideas the class which has the means of material production at its disposal, has control at the same time over the means of mental production. Freedom, because both buyer and seller of a commodityare constrained only by their own free will,they contract as free agents. Property, because each disposes only of what is his own.
