PHILOS 1B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Immanuel Kant, Paternalism, Alexis De Tocqueville
Document Summary
The way that human beings can flourish is by acting in consistence with their faculties reason - the human capacity for reason must be preserved. No one should be allowed to infringe upon individual autonomy to make reasonable decisions. Agreed with aristotle and wollstonecraft in which human beings can only flourish when they are free to use reason to determine their life. His theory is contingent upon detering tyranny and corruption. These requirements are also compatible with monarchy. While kant wants to reject paternalism, he"s not so opposed to monarchies. Most popular reason we have for thinking democracy is better than monarchies is that people disagree. Criticism: kant"s endorsement of monarchy is flawed- based on the thought that human beings all agree and you can have something called a general will - but you cannot. Electoral democracy the only system that allows each individual to have a say, gives them political power.
