Philosophy 1B03
Omar Khadr Case
Summarization
•Omar is threatened and tormented by United States officials to confess and make a statement
•He is interviewed by Canadian officials believing that he would be relieved from Guantanamo
Bay officers but in reality was not there and the Canadian officials would take note of his
statements to potentially use against him
•Was told to spend 1 year in Guantanamo and the other 7 in Canadian penitentiary — How
come he allowed his verdict when he knew he was not guilty
•Transferred his youth trial into an adult
•After 30 days of signing plea the US government would erase all evidence
•Khadr served for a crime that he did not commit but rather one that was not involved in the
initial trial
•RCMP and Government would gather information to be delivered to the US authorities to
persecute Khadr — We participated in his torture
•Sleep deprived for 3 weeks and Guantanamo conditions were horrifying
•IF you are identified as an accused you have charter rights especially more rights as a youth
•Immediately recognized Omar Khadr as a criminal unlike a bystander or witness
•Khadr is forced to implicate himself
Analysis
•We Canadians have entered into a number of International Conventions and deal with the
occurring problem of child soldiers to relieve them (Child soldiers are those younger than 18
yrs old) and educate them of the wrongdoing instead of persecution — Omar was 15 years old
•Rights of Children as child soldiers were not respected and violated the rules of law
•Assigned him as a terrorist by dehumanizing him such as the removal of his first name and
was only regarded by last name basis and implicated that the rest of his family were terrorists
as well.
