Document Summary
Only succeeded in describing human beings to which they are most familiar. There is evidence of people who do not live by the social contract we do(savage) Domestic animal vs wild one = man vs savage man. Man in a state of nature is primitive, in an animal state, wholly unenlightened however they are not in a state of war. We desire knowledge only because we wish to enjoy. A savage man"s desires are limited; his desires never go beyond his physical wants and needs. Must not conclude with hobbes that because man has no idea of goodness, he must naturally be wicked. We want food as it fills the pain of hunger. In society we have a mass of invented needs. Hobbes has imported conventional desires into the state of nature. Savage man loves himself and his offspring. Savage man does not need sovereign or the rule of law.
