Man on trial (socrates) who knowns he is going to be put to death. Defense of what make the life worth living. Socrates: a meaningful life = a good life. Socrates was 70 years old when he went on trial: his charge = corrupting the youth . Apologia = defense (not apologizing, socrates is justifying his life) Socrates didn"t write his ideas down we rely on his students. Everyone agreed socrates was ugly: socrates said he himself was not a teacher, had a questioning mode. Philosophy does not equal history: we deal with ieas, not facts (accuracy is not as important) A corrupted youth one of socrates" students considered the founding father of philosophy interested in a variety of things like socrates, he was an odd (enigmatic) figure. Contradiction of the text: poetic style, but plato was against poets. Socratic method = constant questioning, interrogation: asks questions through logical analysis, can be irritating.
