Bloom says this is a very superficial look at religious beliefs. We are constantly on the lookout for other humans . as system that underlies theory of body and theory of mind are functionally and neurologically distinct. Leads us to believe in entities that don"t actually exist. Most of the time, the theories come together: psychological and biological theory may come apart. Explain something in environment using theory of mind without the theory of body. May postulate an entity: we think things without bodies can have causal change. We think bodies and minds are distinct sort of things. Problem with accidental theory is its narrowness: it only explains religious beliefs, doesn"t explain the transcendent experience, religious rituals or social nature of religion. Religion is adaptive, adaptive function of religion is social not individual: religious groups survive better, being religious as an individual doesn"t have advantage. Religion is evolved solution for bringing together groups of people.
