Document Summary

Patient-physician relationship we are obsessed with giving people the power to make their own choices, as well as ensuring that they have the freedom to act on those choices. This drive toward giving people the power to shape their own life can make the relationship between doctors and patients very challenging. There are 4 different models of how physicians might think about interacting with patient"s in their care. Concerned with balancing the patient"s health and well-being with their status as autonomous agents. Paternalistic model: physicians make decisions on behalf of patients in a way that resembles parental figures. Model assumes that the physician can know what is best for the patient; that there is a single best medical option, and they [physician] alone have access to it. Any personal views held by patient (religious, cultural, etc. ) are all irrelevant. In the case of something like chemo or heart surgery, this might make sense.
