Document Summary

Physicians have to engage with patients that are incapable or unwilling to engage. For those who are incapable of engaging, it is difficult to determine if they"re capable of reasonable decision making at all if they"re competent to consent. Very little agreement as to when and how doctors are to make this decision (i. e. to decide whether someone is a competent decision maker) Possess a set of personal values; values certain goals or ideals. You act so as to realize these goals. In the case of health, people normally care about their well- being, and will act with an eye to that interest. Any person who can"t or isn"t interested in referencing a value is not taken to be competent (i. e. someone who is only interested in acting arbitrarily). Have the ability to communicate and to understand information. A competent person can appreciate the circumstances they"re in, and must be able to deal with information regarding it.
