PHILOS 2D03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Deontological Ethics, Monism
Document Summary
Ross believed utilitarianism of deontology couldn"t capture the moral convictions of the plain man. Failed to do this in two ways: the theories of utilitarianism and deontology are monist, rather than pluralistic. Theories believe that all of our ethical considerations should be guided and can be explained by a single moral value, i. e. happiness/pleasure, respecting human agency. Results in theories being guided by wrong idea. When developing a moral theory, it should accommodate many values must be based on a diverse set of values: such theories are too rigidly formalized (governed by strict procedures). Want to treat morality like math or science. That is not what the world is like and not how to deal with human morality. It is a mistake to think of ethics like a formula, more like an art form, can get better by trying.
