Document Summary

The phaedo is one of plato"s most famous dialogues. The dialogue contains many well-formulated and intriguing arguments: one of the most dramatic dialogue. The dialogue contains many dramatic elements and is considered a masterpiece of greek literature. The phaedo is a middle dialogue: it clearly contains plato"s own ideas. Soul-body dualism, the immortality of the soul, learning is recollection, and the theory of the forms. Some have argued that we are only supposed to extract the logical arguments and reconstruct them in standard form: some people say fuck the story and look at points and put them in standard form. Others have argued that the arguments are irrelevant and that the drama of the dialogue is what matters to plato. There is middle ground: we will be focusing on the arguments, but we can use the dramatic elements to inform our interpretations: when writing paper look at drama to help you write what you can.
