10 views2 pages

Document Summary

We immediately perceive only ideas, and ideas depend only on minds to exist. The materialist maintains that we perceive ideas of material objects mediately through mind, but that the objects of our ideas exist independently of them. Philonous is not convinced: whether motions of external material objects, or internal motions of a material brain, insofar as it is sensible it is mind-dependent. There must be some other mind in which they exist . Philonous: i do not say i see things by perceiving that which represents them in the intelligible substance of god. This i do not understand; but i say the things perceived by me are known by the understanding and produced by the will of an infinite spirit. Meaning: the infinite mind of god always wills and perceives every possible idea, this perception of an infinite mind constitutes our reality and is the cause of the sensible ideas we have.
