Document Summary
Metaphysics is about how things are as a matter of fact. Value theory is normative it is about how thing should (ought) to be. Aesthetics (philosophy of art) the good and bad with respect to beauty and art. Ethics/morality the good and bad with respect to actions and ways of life. So ethics concerns value but there are different sorts of value. We value most things extrinsically or instrumentally as a means to some end. Valued because it brings you things you value intrinsically. Some things we value as ends in themselves. Ethical theories are usually framed in terms of the pursuit of one or more intrinsic. Some argue that happiness is the only truly intrinsic good. Hume"s is-ought fallacy : just because world (our psychology) is certain way doesn"t mean it ought to be. Socrates: morality concerns how we ought to live . Ethics/moral philosophy is the systematic attempt to understand how we ought to live conception .
