What is intersectionality" and why cant it wait: crenshaw"s definition, the urgency. Intersectionality: there is a dominant conception of discrimination assumes discrimination" to be a binary phenomenon functioning along a single axis, ex. Gender discrimination" or gender privilege": however, this dominant conception is flawed, different axes of discrimination interact, discrimination and privilege interact. In many dominant conceptions of discrimination", various axes of privilege disappear: but these invisible forms of privilege nonetheless have a significant effect in structuring concepts of discrimination". Privilege and discrimination interact when they intersect: discrimination is what happens in these interactions, these interactions are not anomalous. Invisible privilege often structures operative concepts of discrimination discrimination are not anomalous. Rather, in every case of privilege or discrimination, multiple forms of privilege and multiple forms of discrimination interact. Acknowledging privilege is hard - particularly for those who also experience discrimination and exclusion.
