Document Summary

Surround is dark, and surround cone releases glutamate onto horizontal cell. Terminals have voltage gated calcium channels, they open. Binds to gaba receptors on the cone. When gaba binds, it lets cl in, which hyperpolarizes the center cone. Already hyperpolarized b/c in light, so now even more hyperpolarized. Having the surround cone in the dark increases hyperpolarization of the center cone. It is as if the center is brighter . Responses of an on-center ganglion cells to different light condition. An on-center ganglion cell fires most when the center is bright and the surround is dark. An off-center ganglion cell fires most when the center is dark and the surround is bright. Luminance contrast light in the center compared to surround vice versa. The center and surround cones can be of different types causing colour opponency. Left/right monocular visual field- the image your left/right eye sees of the world. Temporal visual field- everything to the outside of the fixation point.
