PNB 3RM3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Exposure Therapy, Drive Theory, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Document Summary
Theory = broad explanation of a phenomenon: tries to explain why / how a phenomenon has occurred. Why are theories important: help organize information. Ex: organize aspects of intelligence: help us predict future occurrences of phenomena. Ex: what will be the best type of therapy for ptsd: help us generate new research questions and hypotheses. A theory should include only as many concepts as are necessary to explain or interpret the phenomena of interest. Theories, perspectives, models and hypotheses: **these are different from observation: this is an objective results; whereas theories / perspectives / models / hypotheses are subjective interpretations of objective facts. Perspective: broader explanation than theory: ex: behaviorism, biopsychosocial perspectives. Model: precise explanation of phenomena: more specific, tries to form organization between all the mechanisms involved in a theory, ex: the three-component processing model of memory. Hypothesis: specific prediction: ex: people will be more likely to remember an emotionally charged event than a neutral event.
