Tuesday 27h sept former federal minister bob speller. Canadian party system = total sum of all party systems in the federal constituencies = 338. There are provincial party systems with constituencies with the same boundaries as the federal system - a party can be strong in the provincial level but not federal. Contemporary political party system really begins in 1993 because this is when the progressive party of canada went down to 2 seats and didn"t really recover, with the bloc quebecois being made the official opposition. Reform party entered into an alliance into the conservative party - under harper - and changed its name to entice people to vote for them. Number of parties - not all constituencies have the same parties running - bloc only runs in quebec for instances. Some parties are dominant in particular ridings - one party usually wins the election in a certain area. A constituency may have more than one dominant party.
