Elite theory argues no to both of these questions and the elite theory tells us very little about the characters if social life. Karls suggest that yes there are inequality but social structures produce inequality. Political left party is influenced by marx theory and way of thinking. Context: 19th century britain and the industrial revolution. New products ( new technology + machines) iron, railways, steam-power. New forms of work the factory. New sources of social power manufacturers. Production and consumption = what is produced and consumed by the people. Working in a factory was bad and hard. Factory owners did well and took advantage to take that wealth. Historical research led him to conclude that there are fundamental laws of history. These laws can be discovered through an examination of the economy. Marx want to do a scientific study of society. Looks at laws and history to see how it drives people to do what they are doing.
