Some internal to the state in question. Some external (i. e. the international environment: performance problems created a challenge to the legitimacy of some authoritarian regimes. B(cid:455) the (cid:1005)(cid:1013)(cid:1011)(cid:1004)"s it (cid:449)as appare(cid:374)t that at lease so(cid:373)e authoritaria(cid:374) states former high growth states were stagnating economically. The lack of economic success undermined the legitimacy of these regimes: economic growth created the social conditions for regime change in other authoritarian states. At the same time, other market-based authoritarian states experienced sustained economic growth. However, rather than offering further legitimacy to the authoritarian government, the growth produced the social conditions that would undo authoritarian leadership (modernization theory argument)
