POLSCI 1G06 Lecture 16: Political Science Lecture 16 Terrorism March3
Document Summary
One of the most influential (and most problematic) accounts of the impact of culture on world politics was written by samuel huntington, he argued in the clash of civilization , that world conflict is moving in a new direction. According to huntington: the fundamental source of conflict in the new world will not be primarily ideological or economic. The great division among humankind and the dominating source of conflict will be cultural. Nation states will remain the most powerful actors in world affairs, but the principal conflicts of global politics will occur between nations and groups of different civilizations. According to huntington, the most significant actors in world politics are no longer all from within the same civilizational tradition. In sum (for huntington), when a conflict between two states from different civilizational traditions begins, it is most likely to spread along civilizational lines. Spoiler alert: there are significant problems with huntington"s analysis!
