The cold war was an ideological battle b/t capitalism and communism. It was cold for the rivals but very hot for the places the wars actually took place. Since both us and russia have these weapons, now that britain has one it means more states becoming nuclear powers. Wanted to get more nuclear arms than the other - especially during the 50"s. Fire all of your weapons before your opponent has a chance. To respond to a nuclear launch after one has been shot at you. If you can convince your enemy that you would have a second strike weapon ready. Would want the state to know that you have the ability to strike back. Ussr moved some of their nuclear weapons to cuba in response to us moving theirs to turkey. Doing aggressive things in order to call a bluff to your opponent. Seeing how many nuclear weapons they could edge around each other.
