People have a preconceived idea of who machiavelli is. Difficult to see what he is actually saying. Recognize the fact that he is an important transitional figure. Might not be a right way to live at all. Social and political upheaval at the time of his birth. Italy at the time was very politically unstable. Catholic church was enmeshed with military conquest. Roman empire (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) Or do ethics have no place in politics whatsoever. Not saying that there is no such thing as morality. Politics is not about morality it is about stability: using power to create order, capacity to store order. Morality is done in your own time (cid:1) States that are free impossible to hold and maintain. People want to be free: want to live in republics. Greatest republic in history roman republic. All in order to establish roman republic (cid:1) Look ahead and see what needs to be done.
