Looks into basic foundation of human nature in order to explore justice. Main question: what is the main/best/most important way to live? (every philosopher will have different answers) Plato was born into upper class, life steeped in politics since the beginning. Lived during turmoil time in greece peloponnesian war. Greece was made up of city states all had independent gov"t. Often were at war with each other. Experienced firsthand different types of gov"t due to athens losing war, and thirty tyrants group taking over (therefore had the experience to assess and determine what is the best gov"t system) Socrates was biggest influence in his life (including his family, exposure to gov"t, etc)
