Political science 3n06 2015 lecture 5a: research designs: the case of the experimental method. How do you structure your research study: so that it is reasonable to conclude that x causes y. The key is to have a good research design. If your research is targeted at demonstrating cause-effect relationships: your research design should allow you to convincingly demonstrate three things, correlation, chronological order- cause before effect, non-spuriousness- clearly rule out other potential causes. Explanations for the decline in voter turnout rates; explanations; negative political advertisements causes decrease in voter turnout; how do we explore this argument. 1. comparative study: compare voter turnout in one constituency where there are many negative ads with voter turnout in another constituency where there are few negative ads. Alberta more negative ads lower voter turnout 1. 100% +exposed - vote: experimental method, gather group of students and find out who"s voting, show them negative political ads, ask again if they are going to vote.
