Two or more distinct personality states; marked discontinuity in sense of self; alternations in affect, behaviour, consciousness, memory, perception, cognition, and/or sensory-motor functioning. Disturbance not due to effects of a substance i. e. alcohol, or to another medical condition. 8 did cases in 1944-70, 36 from 1970-79. Alters may have specific roles, situations in which they appear: -prosecutor alter (child or adolescent, -internal self helper (50-80% of cases) 50% of cases have 10 or more alters. Physiology: headaches, allergies, drug reactions, handedness, handwriting, visual acuity, heartrate, menstrual cycle. German did patient w misdiagnosed cortical blindness after accident 13 yrs ago before psychotherapy. No cortical evoked responses to visual stimuli in blind alters.
