Auditory masking occurs when multiple competing signals interfere with perception of signal of interest. Influence of masker is measured experimentally as a change in probe threshold in presence of masker, compared to probe threshold in absence of masker. Alternatively, one can also characterize the amount of masking as the level of masker required to just mask detection of probe signal, compared to probe threshold in absence of masker. Can use tones or noise as probe and masker signals. The integration of sounds can occur over multiple stimulus dimensions, including time. One result of temporal integration is auditory masking.
