Positive states of mind and being­ Jan. 9 • East vs. West:  ­West: world is a horrible place and our goal should be to transcend this to  achieve a good life ▯ comes from Christian theological thinking. Little opportunity  to transcend during life, happens only when we die (afterlife).  Western  philosophy is totally different than western theology. Psychology stems from  philosophy here. Believe that the ability to transcend the horrible world is  completely out of our hands ­East: also believes the world is horrible but transcendence can be achieved in this  life, unlike West. Didn’t emphasize afterlife. Eastern philosophy is the same as  eastern theology. Psychology stems from religion here. Buddhism largely from  psychology. Believe that the ability to transcend the horrible world is in our  hands. ­both: hedonia and eudaimonia present in both ­hedonic: we live to ex
