PSYCH 3CD3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Social Identity Theory, Ingroups And Outgroups, Relative Deprivation
Document Summary
When intergroup situation is going to result in violence of some sort. If you feel deprived relative to some standard set for the group, it will cause you to lash out against the group you feel responsible for this deprivation. Hovland and sears (1940) looked at the lynching frequency. The average number was 69 per year, but there was much variability. Most happened in the south, where cotton picking slavers lived. When cotton prices were surging, lynching was not as common. When the farmers are doing very well, they lynch fewer slaves. When a downturn of prices occurred, lynchings increased. Lynching is correlated to economic success of farmers in the region. Falling cotton prices leads to frustration, which must be released via aggression. Scapegoating: if we feel like we need to take something out on someone, we blame whoever is easiest to blame. Blacks are slaves and have no rights, so they are the scapegoats.
