April 2 , 2014 Psych 3UU3: Psychology of Language The Structure of the Language System The Structure of the Language System ­ How does all this stuff fit together? • How do the components of the language system work together? • How do the components of the language system work together with other  cognitive systems? (memory) • Think about these things as you are studying Modularity of Mind ­ The mind has separate modules ­ The language system has separate modules ­ What might some of those modules be? ­ A module does ONE function (e.g. works on only one kind of representation) ­ Modules are informationally encapsulated: when it’s working on it and other  information can go into it but can only process that information, no other  influences acting on it, not joining differ
