Document Summary

Unconscious, reflexive learning is vital to the survival of a species. Ie. a child touches a hot stove once, learns to avoid glowing red elements to prevent pain and injury. 2 types of unconscious learning: classical conditioning, allows us to associate 2 related events, instrumental conditioning, allows us to associate actions and consequences. Foundation for classical conditioning: (also called pavlovian conditioning) Contingencies: when 1 stimulus reliably predicts the presentation of another. Classical conditioning: the learning of a contingency between a particular signal and a later event that are paired in time and/or space: ex: salivating when seeing food (ie. a lemon) The unconditional stimulus: any stimulus or event, occurs naturally, prior to learning, without training, unconditionally and automatically triggers a response in the absence of any learning. The unconditional response: the response that occurs after the unconditioned stimulus, occurs naturally, prior to any learning, when a us occurs, a ur always follows without the need for training, biologically programmed reflex.
