Document Summary

Lecture 3: structures of the brain brainstem to amygdala. The brainstem is the oldest part of the brain. The structures in the brain stem are not duplicated as are those above it. Grey matter in the brain is composed of cell bodies. The most basic functions are controlled in the medulla oblongata. The pons controls facial expression and its low location in the brain suggests that we may share some expressions with other animals. The cerebellum ( mini brain ) smooths motor movements. Compares what the brain wants and what the body is actually doing. This network runs throughout most of the brainstem. It is involved in attention and waking up from sleep. The thalamus is the sensory relay station. The hypothalamus regulates the body"s internal environment. Includes fluid levels, temperature, food intake, and sexual drive. The limbic system is a number of interconnected structures deep inside the brain. Plays a role in the formation of new memories.
