Complex system of communication allowing us to share details and emotions with others. There is no indication of the meaning of a word given by its phonemes. Allows us to express what we are thinking/ feeling. There are different languages between species (human/animal) Fake languages made up for our entertainment (different in movies and shows) Grammar: clear rules: including syntax and morphology. Some words have certain meanings behind them that can come across as offensive. Words/ phrases created to hurt people (racial slurs) Having a bad day and just want to ruin someone else(cid:495)s day. Taboo words activate brain areas associated with negative emotion: right hemisphere. Using swear words = found in the basal ganglia. Force a listener to think about an unpleasant (or at least emotionally charged) thought. Damn, hell, for pete(cid:495)s sake: body effluvia and organs, more potent in religious societies, evokes emotions of awe and fear.
