Lecture 10 forming impressions: when cognition meets social interactions. What we see in our external world is driving what we are thinking about. What we are thinking about is driving our external thoughts. System 2 = slow = processing = effortful. When making judgements/forming impressions, we use system 1 thinking: when it comes to first impressions, we may not want to trust our fast thinking, stereotyping, biases, racism, misogyny can result from this poor thinking tactic. Using system 2 is better: no stereotypes, get to know person better. Stereotypes (cognition: beliefs about attributes that are thought to be characteristic of members of particular groups. Prejudice (affect: a negative attitude or affective response toward a certain group and its individual members. Discrimination (behaviour: negative behaviour towards members of a particular group based on their membership in that group. A stereotype does(cid:374)"t ha(cid:448)e to (cid:271)e (cid:374)egati(cid:448)e. Schemas represent ourselves, others, objects and events.
