PSYCH 1X03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Abusive Power And Control, Telemarketing, Cognitive Dissonance
Document Summary
Our thoughts and behaviours are influenced by the people around us. Look to others for cues as to how you should behave and act in a situation. You act very different when around your peers vs when you"re with your grandma. Social psychology is not as intuitive as it seems. Cyclists raced faster when competing against each other in a group, compared to when racing against the clock on an individual time trial: similar to how children act when there is no reward for doing something. Children were faster at fishing when other children were around, rather than when alone. The mere presence of others was an important variable in the performance of the actor. Co-actor: another individual participating in the task. Audience: the people watching an individual perform a task. Social facilitation: the presence of co-actors or an audience affects performance (increased performance) The presence of others can sometimes hinder performance, rather than improve it.
