Document Summary

The goal of any scientist is to discover new info on how the world works. How to collect and analyze information while trying to minimize bias, conflicts, oversights standardizes the procedures of research and reduces bias. Incorporate new information into our understanding of the world. Hypothesis: all else being equal, a significant difference between experimental and control group results in two identical distributions with different means. Paradigm shift: a drastic change in the way we think: ex. 1543 copernicus challenging the existing dogma that the earth was in the centre of the universe. Conducting an experiment: testing a hypothesis with an experiment allows for casual conclusions. Insufficient to draw scientific conclusions rigorous testing: single experience might not be representative, personal experience might not represent others, cannot be sure that result is due to energy drinks alone. Experiment: scientific tool used to measure the effect of one variable on another. Dependent variable: variable being observed by the scientist.
