The scientific method provides 7 steps to collect/analyze info while trying to minimize biases, conflicts and oversights: construct a theory. Collect general set of ideas about how the world works: generate hypothesis. Form testable statement guided by theories that make specific predictions about the relationship between variables: choose research method. Determine the way in which the hypothesis will be tested: collect data. Take measurements of the outcomes of the test: analyze data. Understand the data and discover trends or relationships between the variables: report findings. Publish articles in scholarly journals: revise existing theories. Scientists analyze the data to note specific trends/relationships that the research has revealed, ultimately leading to the decision to accept/reject the original hypothesis. Formal presentations at scientific meetings with goal of publishing articles in scholarly journals: dramatic change in thinking: paradigm shift, ex. 1543 when copernicus challenged dogma that earth was center of universe. It standardizes the procedure of research and reduces bias.
