Language is regular: language is governed by rules and grammar. A sentence can be reorganized and still retain the same meaning. Language is arbitrary: there are lack of resemblance between words and their meaning. Or else there won"t be different language. Language is productive: limitless ways to combine words. Language influences our thoughts and the way we perceive and experience the world. Piraha(tribe in brazil), they only have numerical concept to 1, 2 and many. Members of the tribe cannot match after 2 with their familiar object. Counter: wyoming arapho indians uses a single word to describe any relatives, but they can distinct between relatives. Morphemes: the smallest unit of sound that contains information. The use of sounds/words/symbols to transfer information. A single world can be made up of different morphemes. Sign language"s morpheme are identified in units of sign. Morphemes can be broken down further into phonemes [oral language] Various language contain different library of phonemes for combination.
