PSYCH 1X03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Working Memory, Pomodoro Technique
Document Summary
Studying in busy environments is bad for studying. Multitasking is actually task switching, which decreases overall efficiency. Set a timer for around 25 mins ( focus entirely on the task at hand) Return to another 25 mins of ficus. After 5 cycles of 25 mins of focus take a 30 min break. The spacing effect- by distributing studying over more time, you learn the same information in less total time studying. Highlighting, re reading or writing notes- ineffective, the information is quickly learned and quickly forgotten. The brain is receiving lots of input but very little output. Fluency- when we become so used to the material written down we think we have a good grasp of it but we don"t. Why is practice testing better then repeated exposure?- involves active memory retrieval. Which strengthens neurons associated with the information and the correct answer.
