Document Summary
Introduction to attention: attention helps you to navigate your surroundings, without the ability to focus your processing resources you wouldn"t be able to do simple every day task, as humans we have limited attentional resources. Controlled processes: conscious attention, slow, effortful, ex. Involuntary capture : fast, efficient, think of like fear, or other automatic responses that cause you to jump , ex. If it"s extra focus on one thing assume spotlight. Automatic processing: cuing paradigms test the automatic processes of attention, you are asked to focus on the centre of a screen with two boxes and identify which box a star flashes in. They were able to repeat back the message of one but not the other. Filter models and attention: spotlights enhance the stimulus, whereas filters suppress the noise. Information is received, the noise if filtered out, and the important information is passed through for processing: example: flower in grass, spotlight enhances the flower, filter fades the grass.
