Classification allows you to group items that look different together (green,yellow,red apples are all apples) Understanding categorizing scenes and understanding how to react. Predicting by categorizing previous experiences you are able to make predictions on your current situation. Communication many words relate to a concept or category, automatic categorization. Illusion of the expert, the feeling that something must be simple because you"re really good at it. Simple to you, but not everyone can do them. Dr. lee brooks: simpler categories are more susceptible to the illusion of the expert; harder to make simple rules for abstract categories. We categorize objects by comparing them to an internal representation of the category called a prototype. Thought to be the average or the best member of a category. Formed through experience and can be very personal because all of the objects you previously experienced are categorized together. We categorize new objects by comparing them to our prototypes.
