Document Summary
Classification: allows you to treat objects that appear differently as belonging together, ex. Red apples, green apples and yellow apples appear different but are still classified as apples. Seeing two people shout, we understand they are in a fight. Predicting: categorizing current experience and comparing it with similar past experiences, you can predict your current situation. Communication: words refer to some type of category or concept. Illusion of the expert: feeling that something must be easy because you are so good at it. Difficult to appropriate rules for simple categorizations. Humans have an internal representation of categories independent of the rules we try to define. Categorization of objects by comparing them to an internal representation of the category (a prototype) Prototype: internal average or best member of a category. More typical category members which are usually more similar to the prototype are categorized more quickly than atypical category members.
