Experimental psychology: uses scientific method to: Draw sound conclusions: utilizes critical thinking (and some skepticism) Ebbinghaus began his textbook in 1908: psychology has a long past but a short history. Psychology: originates from greek psyche meaning soul; the study of the mind. Study of the mind used to be dealt by philosophy and physiology. Thousands of years prior philosophers questioned: how do we learn and remember? aristotle, where does knowledge come from? plato. Rene descartes: suggested mind and body are distinct entities linked in a dualistic relationship, mind controls movement of mechanical body, mind in turn receives information about the outside world through sense organs.
