Document Summary

Going from phenomenon to de ne a problem to come up with testable hypothesis. Selection: attending to something causes the object of attention to be selected apart from the rest unattended objects. Ex: when you wear a soft cloth and you feel good, but later in the day you feel unaware of the softness because there are many stimuli that are competing for your attention. Some stimuli can draw your attention in an automatic fashion: ash of light. Attention also refers to our conscious ability to attend information that is relevant to our goals: actively selecting where to focus your attention on. Background noise can distract: looking for a person in a huge crowd, looking for a particular object in an unfamilar environment. Some cues are more noticeable than other cues: lead to stronger and quicker association when paired with events. Auto pilot: accidentally drive to another location because the person is so used to driving to one place.
