PSYCH 1X03 Lecture 12: Influence of others
Document Summary
Cyclists race faster than individual race against the clock. This can also be observed in children doing competitive tasks with no reward. Children wind the shing rod faster in a group. Social facilitation: the increase performance that occurs when co-actor or audience is present. Exceptions to the rule: learning non-sense syllables, completing a maze, solving a dif cult math problem. Zajonc"s resolution: presence of others increases arousal to improve performance on simple/practiced tasks, and decreases performance on complex/unfamiliar tasks. Social learning theory: you learn appropriate behaviour by imitating the others. Different than conditioning because the behaviour you learn from others don"t necessarily require a reward. Bobo doll experiment: children between 3 and 6 years old are placed in a room with an adult. The adult will model an aggressive play or passive play. Children imitate this experiment: they don"t need any reinforcement for aggressive behaviour. Go against behaviourist theory which suggests learning a behaviour requires reinforcement.
