What is attention: attention captures a portion of the external world to the internal mind. Internal: thoughts that compete within our own mind: attention is a dialogue between bottom-up and top-down processing. Bottom up processing: basic features to a more conceptual analysis. Top down processing: bias", heuristics, where prior experiences guide to how you pay attention: attention is the glue required for conjunctive search. Combining more than one feature: colour, shape, movement etc. Vigilance: maintaining attention to a certain place for a period of time. Selection: we only pay attention to a limited set of information in the environment. Dichotic listening studies reveal little is perceived in an unattended channel. Loud room and told to focus on a speci c subject often ignores the other message/ attended vs ignored inputs. Cannot recall the semantics of unattended message. But in some cases, content in the unattended ear is perceived.
