Refers to the changes and continuities that occur within the individual between conception and death. Developmental psychologists interested in understanding how you change over time but also how you stay the same. 2 different processes which lead to developmental change: maturation, learning. The biologically-timed unfolding of changes within the individual; how that plan unfolds is influenced by specific environmental conditions that shape the genetically- determined processes. Leads to the development of enduring changes in your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Learning processes allow you to acquire new information and guide optimal strategies to respond to events and stimuli in the environment. Through learning processes, you avoid touching a hot stove or looking both ways before crossing the road. These learned processes can be controlled but can also become so practiced as to become automatic.
