Terminology: neuraxis: the nervous system axis, dorsal: back of the axis. At the level of the head, dorsal is up. At the level of the spinal cord, dorsal is to the back: ventral: front of the axis, rostral: top of axis, caudal: bottom of axis, medial: closer to midline, lateral: farther from midline. Example: rostal ventral medial medulla = towards the top, in front of the neurosis, towards the midline of the brain. Case study: jill and phil are siblings, jill is cautious whereas phil is more impulsive. Remarkably, gage survived, and except for some loss of vision and facial dis gurement, he recovered completely: however, his friends barely recognized him as the gage they once knew. This makes a more dif cult task of assigning impaired function to speci c brain areas: this problem can be overcome by studying speci c brain lesions induced in animal models.
