This variation is bound by systematic constraints about the contexts in which they can occur. 5 principles of language: a grammar represents the possibilities and constraints that govern how a language is and can be used, any language system used productively among a speech community inherently. The standard variety is associated with good grammar . Non-standard varieties may be stigmatized and/or associated with bad grammar : prescriptive vs descriptive grammar. Prescriptive grammar: a set of rules about language based on how people think language should be used.
