Prior expectations of how something looks is how we end up seeing it. The face on mars from afar: caused numerous theories to develop about why there was a face on mars, up close, the face on mars was just a regular mountain range. Big events are expected to have big causal explanations: ex. The president of kumar is targeted in an assassination attempt. Crop circles, though believed to be the work of aliens, was just the work of a few humans. Faces: a special form of pattern recognition: turn everything into a face if we can, pareidolia the phenomenon of seeing a face in an object, an innate preference for faces is influenced by experience. The hollow face illusion: inside part of hollow mask looks 3d, happens because we are accustomed to seeing convex, popping-out faces rather than concave, punched in faces, example of top-down processing.
