Document Summary
Clinicians use the four d"s to broadly define abnormality . Normal/abnormal behaviour vary b/w people, cultures, and time periods. Clinicians use a set of criteria to define abnormality, aka the four d"s: deviance, distress, dysfunction, and danger. Deviance: having thoughts, emotions, and with the population, they"re just different behaviours that fall far outside standards of other people. Doesn"t mean that all people who differ from group norms have a psychological disorder. Deviance refers to those far below or above group standard. You shouldn"t label cultural practices of a minority population as psychological disorders - nothing is wrong. Distress refers to negative feelings related to thoughts and behaviour . Distress: when a person experiences intense negative feelings due to their behaviour (e. g sadness, anxiety, or despair); can be indicative of a psychological disorder. Psychological disorders do not always cause distress. Bipolar patients in manic phase feel extremely elated and larger than life - not distressed.
