Psychology 1X03 – Introduction to Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour
Attention
Selective Attention
- Pay more attention to an object of choice, less attention to others
What is attention?
- There is very selected focus that occurs
- Every now and then a match up comes up and the selected attention must
match up with the alertness arousal
- This is known as a vigilance task
The costs of not paying attention
- Bus drivers, train drivers, truck drivers, etc., may get into accidents due to
lack of attention to the task at hand
- Not a motor error but rather a lack of attention at that point in time
What guidelines can prevent driver errors leading to accidents?
- Preventing people from distracting the driver
- Taking breaks in the amount of time spent driving
What is attention?
- Can choose which areas an individual focuses on
- Due to different colours of words in a paragraph, allows selective attention to
occur based on what is wanted
We only pay attention to a limited set of information in the environment
- Scanning a picture for a specific object will take time some time due to not
paying attention to the whole diagram but rather being selective with
attention
- Much quicker if the area is reduced; object is pointed out to a certain area
Why can’t you recall the letters?
- Selective attention causes focus to be placed on the numbers in a line while
ignoring the letters
We only pay attention to a limited set of information in the environment
- There is an experiment in which two people are switched out and individuals
do not notice
MacIntroPsych TAs test it out
- Psychology TAs attempt to recreate this experiment
- In 5/8 trials individuals did not notice
Change Blindness: even with directed focus, attention limits lead us to miss
information
- If the difference is not seen right away it takes a while to discover
